Eligibility
Q
Who can apply through JUPAS (3-year curriculum)?
A

Please refer to section Application via JUPAS

Q
If I have accepted an Associate Degree / Higher Diploma offer under 2011 JUPAS, am I eligible to apply via 2012 JUPAS?
A

Yes. You can apply via 2012 JUPAS even if you are enrolled in an Associate Degree / Higher Diploma programme.

Q
Will the HKDSE and HKALE candidates be separated in the JUPAS admissions exercises in 2012?
A

Applicants can apply for admission to participating-institutions via JUPAS using either HKALE or HKDSE but not both in the same academic year.

Applicants with HKALE results only should apply for admission via JUPAS to the 3-year curriculum.

Applicants with HKDSE results only should apply for admission via JUPAS to the 4-year curriculum.

There will be separate quota for the respective cohort (i.e. 3-year curriculum and 4-year curriculum) in the admission process in 2012.

Q
Could S7 students take the HKALE as school candidates while at the same time take the HKDSE Examination in the capacity of private candidates in 2012 and apply for admission directly to the participating-institutions (via non-JUPAS channel)?
A
  • No, because it has already been pledged by UGC to the community that there will be separate quota, i.e. 15,000 each for the HKALE and HKDSE cohorts in 2012.

  • JUPAS participating-institutions would observe the quota for respective cohort in their admission process in 2012.

Q
If students get unsatisfactory results in 2012 HKALE, could they repeat HKALE while at the same time take the HKDSE in the capacity of private candidates in 2013 and apply for admission directly to the participating-institutions(via non-JUPAS channel)
A

In 2012

Students can apply for university places via JUPAS using either HKALE or HKDSE but not both.

In 2013 and beyond,

  • Students who re-take HKALE and with HKALE results only should apply for admission directly to the participating-institutions (via non-JUPAS channel). Institutions might consider advanced standing for such applicants.

  • Students with HKDSE results only should apply for admission to the participating-institutions via JUPAS channel.

  • Students with a combination of HKALE and HKDSE results, and if HKDSE results alone would make them eligible for application to the study programmes offered via JUPAS may apply either via JUPAS or directly to the participating-institutions, but not both. Assessment of such applicants applying via JUPAS will be based primarily on HKDSE.

  • Students with a combination of HKALE and HKDSE results which together would make them eligible for application to the participating-institutions should apply directly to the participating-institutions (via non-JUPAS channel).

Q
Will there be any special arrangement for admission of double cohort (HKALE & HKDSE) repeaters in 2013?
A

Offer
Q
What are merit order lists? Are they compiled by the JUPAS Office?
A

A merit order list is a rating list. Each programme you have applied to will give you a rating in accordance with its criteria for selection. Such rating will determine your position in the merit order list of each programme of your choice. The computer system will match (the "iteration process") the order of preference you have assigned to the study programmes of your choice with the position you have been placed in each merit order list of these programmes. You will then be made an offer of the highest priority on your programme list for which you have the required rating.

Merit order lists are compiled by the respective programmes' admissions tutors. Therefore determination of applicants' suitability for admission is entirely the decisions of the 9 participating-institutions under JUPAS and is entirely independent of the JUPAS Office.

Q
How are offers made?
A

Each programme will give you a rating in accordance with its criteria for selection.

A flash demo which briefly describes the iteration process can be downloaded from the section Useful Material.

Q
Can I decline my offer in the Main Round / Clearing Round in order to be re-considered in the Subsequent Round?
A

NO. If you decline your offer in the Main Round / Clearing Round, you will NOT be re-considered for admission to any other programmes under JUPAS in the same year.

(Please refer to section Subsequent Round Offer)

Q
When and how will the Subsequent Round offer results be announced?

Q
If I have declined my offer in the Subsequent Round, will my application be further considered by the participating-institutions?
A

If you fail to confirm your acceptance of an offer on or before the deadline (i.e. 16 August 2012* (8:00 am)), you are regarded as having declined your offer. In such an event, you may be further considered by institutions only if vacancies are still available.

(Please refer to section Subsequent Round Offer)

Q
I have fulfilled the minimum entrance requirements of a programme. Why is it that I am not given an offer by the programme?
A

Admission to the institutions is on a competitive basis, since the number of places available is far less than the number of eligible applicants. In this regard, satisfying the minimum entrance requirement of an institution or a programme does not therefore guarantee admission.

Q
I have obtained better grades in my HKALE than my classmate, and we have both selected the same programmes. Why is it that he / she has received an offer but I did not?
A

Your HKCEE and HKALE grades alone do not determine whether you will enter an institution of your choice. Other factors come into consideration such as information contained in your application form, and for some programmes, interview(s) and / or test(s), banding of programme choices, overall grades achieved by other applicants in the current year, and the number of applicants applying to the programme, etc. It is therefore not appropriate to only compare grades between applicants.

Q
I have obtained the same results as the applicant whose position was in the "lower quartile" of a programme as published in the Admissions Grades / Figures, but I did not receive any offer, why?
A

Information on admissions grades / figures is for reference only, and should not be used to predict the chance of admission to any programme in subsequent years.

It should also be noted that not all programmes select students on the basis of HKCEE and HKALE grades alone and the actual grades of the students admitted to each programme may vary from year to year (depending on the overall grades achieved by applicants in a particular year, the number of applicants applying to the programme, changes in selection criteria, etc.).

HKALE Appeal
Q
How can I appeal against my HKALE results?
A

You have to check with the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority (HKEAA). (Tel: 3628 8860)

Appeal results will be announced by the HKEAA on 27 July 2012*.

Q
What should I do if I have HKALE results revised in overall grade(s) and wish to be re-considered for an offer / a "better" offer?
A

You can submit a request for re-consideration of your application on 28 July 2012*.

To submit a request for re-consideration, you are required to login onto your account at the JUPAS online application system, using your login name and the password you have previously selected.

(Please refer to section HKALE Appeal Cases)

Q
Can I submit a request for re-consideration if I am given an offer in the Main Round?
A

Yes. You can submit a request for re-consideration based on your revised HKALE grade(s) regardless of whether you have been made an offer or have accepted an offer in the Main Round or not.

Q
Should I accept the Main Round Offer while I appeal against my HKALE results?
A

If you already have been made an offer in the Main Round and if you wish to accept this offer, our advice is that you SHOULD accept this Main Round offer while your request for re-consideration is pending, because this is the only offer you will receive in the case that you do not receive a "better" offer.

Please note that if you are given a "better" offer (i.e. a higher preference programme of your choice, and which is also the FINAL offer) on the strength of the revised grade(s), your original offer in the Main Round will be withdrawn.

(Please refer to section HKALE Appeal Cases)

Q
If I am given a "better" offer, can I choose to accept either the original offer or the "better" offer?
A

No. If you are given a "better" offer (i.e. a higher preference programme of your choice, and which is also the FINAL offer) on the strength of the revised HKALE grade(s), your original offer in the Main Round will be withdrawn. You will be required to accept the "better" offer.

In this regard, if you are already satisfied with your Main Round offer, there is no need for you to go through the procedures as specified here.
