About JUPAS

Eligibility
Q
Who can apply through JUPAS 4-year curriculum?
A

Please refer to section Application via JUPAS.

Q
Will the HKDSE and HKALE candidates be separated in the JUPAS admissions exercises in 2012?
A

Applicants can apply for admission to participating-institutions via JUPAS using either HKALE or HKDSE but not both in the same academic year.

Applicants with HKALE results only should apply for admission via JUPAS to the 3-year curriculum.

Applicants with HKDSE results only should apply for admission via JUPAS to the 4-year curriculum.

There will be separate quota for the respective cohort (i.e. 3-year curriculum and 4-year curriculum) in the admission process in 2012.

Q
Could S7 students take the HKALE as school candidates while at the same time take the HKDSE Examination in the capacity of private candidates in 2012 and apply for admission directly to the participating-institutions (via non-JUPAS channel)?
A
  • No, because it has already been pledged by UGC to the community that there will be separate quota, i.e. 15,000 each for the HKALE and HKDSE cohorts in 2012.
  • JUPAS participating-institutions would observe the quota for respective cohort in their admission process in 2012.

Q
If students get unsatisfactory results in 2012 HKALE, could they repeat HKALE while at the same time take the HKDSE in the capacity of private candidates in 2013 and apply for admission directly to the participating-institutions(via non-JUPAS channel)?
A

In 2012

Students can apply for university places via JUPAS using either HKALE or HKDSE but not both.

In 2013 and beyond,

  • Students who re-take HKALE and with HKALE results only should apply for admission directly to the participating-institutions (via non-JUPAS channel). Institutions might consider advanced standing for such applicants.
  • Students with HKDSE results only should apply for admission to the participating-institutions via JUPAS channel.
  • Students with a combination of HKALE and HKDSE results, and if HKDSE results alone would make them eligible for application to the study programmes offered via JUPAS may apply either via JUPAS or directly to the participating-institutions, but not both. Assessment of such applicants applying via JUPAS will be based primarily on HKDSE.
  • Students with a combination of HKALE and HKDSE results which together would make them eligible for application to the participating-institutions should apply directly to the participating-institutions (via non-JUPAS channel).

Q
Will there be any special arrangement for admission of double cohort (HKALE & HKDSE) repeaters in 2013?
A

Summary Chart

Q
Can applicants sit for other academic examinations (such as GCE, SAT) AS WELL AS HKDSE, depending on the results acquired, apply either via JUPAS or to the institutions directly?
A

Applicants with HKDSE results only:

Applicants with HKDSE results only should apply via JUPAS for admission to the 4-year curriculum offered by the JUPAS participating-institutions. Deadline for application is 9 January 2012.

Applicants with other academic qualifications only:

Applicants with other academic qualifications only (such as GCE, HKALE, SAT, etc.) are not sitting for the 2012 HKDSE should not apply via JUPAS for admission to the 4-year curriculum. Such applicants should apply to the institutions directly.

Applicants with HKDSE results AND other academic qualifications:

Applicants with HKDSE results AND other qualifications (such as GCE, HKALE results, etc.) should normally apply via JUPAS. The assessment of their applications via JUPAS will be based primarily on HKDSE results.

However, such applicants with HKDSE results AND other qualifications, and if their "other qualifications" alone would also make them eligible for application, they may apply via JUPAS or directly to institutions, but not both in the same academic year.

(Please refer to section on Concurrent Application)

OEA and SLP
Q
Are all applicants required to submit OEA information?
A

To facilitate participating-institutions to consider applicants' performances in activities in addition to their academic results, applicants are advised to submit the OEA information, which is part of the JUPAS application form. Applicants should make reference to their own SLPs when completing the form.

Q
What information are applicants required to enter in the OEA form?
A

Applicants are required to provide the following information in the OEA form:

  1. Name of Activity

Applicants are required to enter keywords to search for the appropriate activity (English / Chinese) and select the specific activity. Applicants can enter up to maximum of 20 items of their activities / achievements. However, applicants should be reminded that it is quality, rather than quantity, that matters in activities. Applicants should preferably have quality experiences rather than mere participation across many activities. In the light of the above, applicants are strongly advised to carefully select the activities that could highlight the essence of their recent personal development and hence, DO NOT have to enter all 20 items.

  1. Year of Participation
  1. Participation Mode
    • As Leader
    • As Committee Member
    • As Member / Participant
  1. Whether it is attended as School Activities / Non-school Activities
  1. Whether it is an award-bearing activity
  1. Award Nature
  • Award-bearing Activity
    • By Competition
    • By Nomination
    • By Participation
  • Non Award-bearing Activity
    • By Nomination
    • By Participation
  1. Award Type (if it is an award-bearing activity)
    • Champion / Gold Medal
    • 1st / 2nd Runner-up / Silver / Bronze Medal
    • Other Awards
    • No Awards
  1. Additional Information

The section "Additional Information" is not compulsory. Applicants have the discretion to decide whether or not to complete the section "Additional Information". It serves as a means for applicants to channel information on their interests and achievements to participating-institutions for reference. Applicants can submit the "Additional Information" in either English or Chinese. Please note that "Additional Information" aims at allowing applicants to provide additional information and a fuller picture of their personal development during their secondary schooling and NOT at testing applicants' language skills.

Q
How many items can be submitted in Part I and II of OEA?
A

The maximum number of items allowed to be put into Parts I and II together in total is 20. They can either be uploaded by school or input by student. There is no restriction on the number of Part I / II activities so long as the total does not exceed 20.

Q
If applicants cannot find the name of the award / activity in the drop-down list provided, what can they do?
A

If applicants cannot find the name of the award / activity in the drop-down list, they can enter it under "Others" and enter the name of the activity in the space provided. Applicants are also required to provide information of the activity in the "Description" box. Uploading of supplementary information / documentation for Part I School activities under "Others" is optional.

However, the uploading of supplementary information / documentation for Part II Non-school activities with sequence number "00000" is mandatory and important as participating-institutions may not be sufficiently clear about the many varieties of non-school activities. If you fail to do so, such awards / activities WILL NOT be taken into consideration and your OEA information cannot be confirmed.

Based on the information contained in the supporting document(s), the JUPAS Office will assign a sequence number to such awards / activities for participating-institutions’ easy reference.

Q
Are applicants required to write an essay for their OEA information?
A

The section "Additional Information" is not compulsory. Applicants have the discretion to decide whether or not to complete the section "Additional Information". It serves as a means for applicants to channel information on their interests and achievements to participating-institutions for reference.

Q
Can "Additional Information" be submitted in Chinese?
A

"Additional Information" can be uploaded by schools or input by students in either English or Chinese.

Please note that "Additional Information" aims at allowing applicants to provide additional information and a fuller picture of their personal development during their secondary schooling and NOT at testing applicants' language skills.

Q
Do achievements found in the drop-down list have higher recognition than items that cannot be found from the list?
A

It is not possible to include all awards / activities / competitions in the drop-down list. The list has been formulated according to awards / activities / competitions reported by applicants in the past years. In this respect, it does not mean that achievements found in the drop-down list have higher recognition than items that cannot be found from the list.

Schools are welcome to suggest addition of any new items.

Applicants can also feel free to key in the name of the awards / activities / competitions as necessary.

Q
When does the OEA information need to be submitted?
A

The deadline for submission of OEA information is 3 February 2012 (5:00 pm).

Q
Will participating-institutions consider school activities that have been entered by applicants but are not verified by schools?
A

School applicants' Part I school activities not verified by schools may not be taken into consideration by the participating-institutions.

Q
How will participating-institutions consider SLP and OEA of the applicants?
A

OEA information, which is likely to be based on individual's SLP, would be a summary highlight provided by individual applicants and will be considered actively during admission selection.

As for the full SLP, because of the volume and for practical reasons, they or some of them (e.g. those for Band A applicants) will be referred to dependent on the programmes (e.g. Social Work may refer to them more) and as necessary (e.g. when there are ties, this may give more information to determine the admission priority; they may be referred to during interviews).

Q
How significant is OEA in the calculation of admission scores by participating-institutions / programmes? If an applicant obtains A in all subjects but he / she does not have any entries under OEA, will this reduce his / her chance of admission?
A

Determination of applicants' suitability for admission is entirely the decisions of the 9 participating-institutions and is entirely independent of the JUPAS Office. Applicants may refer to the websites of the participating-institutions for more information on admission criteria.

Q
Are all applicants required to submit their full SLP for university admission? If so, how?
A

Participating-institutions recognise SLP as a document of good reference value for admissions purposes under the 334 academic reform.

With the adoption of a summary template (i.e. the OEA form), the submission of full SLP is optional. Applicants can upload their SLP (in PDF format) to the JUPAS online application system in PDF format with a maximum file size of 3MB. Alternatively, they can submit their portfolios to individual programmes when they are invited for interviews.

Q
Do applicants need to submit hard copies of their full SLP? If so, when?
A

The submission of full SLP is optional.

Applicants who wish to submit their individual full SLP may do so by uploading them (in PDF format) to the JUPAS online application system on or before 31 March 2012.

Alternatively, they can also submit them to individual programmes when they are invited for interviews.

Q
It is said that applicants can submit their SLP to the participating-institutions during interviews. What if they are not invited to interview by any of the programmes?
A

Applicants can still submit their full SLP to the participating-institutions via the JUPAS online application system.

Q
How and where can applicants upload their SLP portfolios?
A

Applicants who wish to submit SLP have to upload the full SLP portfolio (in PDF format) onto the JUPAS online application system during the period 25 October 2011 - 31 March 2012 (11:59 pm).

Q
Will participating-institutions consider applicants' SLP?
A

Information contained in SLP can help participating-institutions observe the applicants from an all-round perspective. Applicants can choose to supply this information to participating-institutions for reference and consideration.

School Reference Report
Q
Must school principals complete the section "Supplementary Information from Principal" for each applicant?
A

No, principals are requested to provide supplementary information on the students concerned only if they deem there is / are event(s) that may adversely affect their student's application (such as sickness, accident, family problem, etc).

JUPAS Office / participating-institutions may ask the applicant to produce documentation as proof and support if considered appropriate.

Q
Can students view their own rating in School Reference Report when login onto the JUPAS Online Application System?

Certified true copies of certificates of other qualifications
Q
Some of the 2012 HKDSE candidates might have HKALE and / or HKCEE results. Will participating-institutions take their HKALE and / or HKCEE results into consideration when assessing their applications for the 4-year curriculum?
A

2012 HKDSE candidates with HKALE and / or HKCEE results and wish to apply for admission via JUPAS to the 4-year curriculum can enter their past HKALE and / or HKCEE results under "Other Academic Results".

It is entirely participating-institutions' discretion to decide how qualifications obtained by the applicants would be considered when assessing their eligibility for admissions.

Q
Can I submit other qualifications after the application deadline?
A

Yes. You can enter in the JUPAS online application system no later than 30 March 2012 and submit certified true copies to the JUPAS Office no later than 13 April 2012 with application no. marked on the upper right corner.

(Please refer to section Academic Results other than HKDSE Results and / or Music Qualifications).

Withdrawal from JUPAS
Q
What should I do if I want to withdraw from JUPAS?
A

If you decide to withdraw from JUPAS, you MUST submit your request to the JUPAS Office by completing the "Withdrawal Form" which can be downloaded from "Download Area" in the online application system and returning the completed form to the JUPAS Office either in person or by post by the deadline of 23 July 2012 (5:00 pm).

Please note that once your withdrawal request is confirmed, you will no longer be able to access your application to the specific admissions exercise and will not, under any circumstances, be reinstated in this same academic year. Any application / amendment fees paid will not be refunded or transferred to another year.

Please refer to section Withdrawl from JUPAS.

Offer
Q
What are merit order lists? Are they compiled by the JUPAS Office?
A

A merit order list is a rating list. Each programme you have applied to will give you a rating in accordance with its criteria for selection. Such rating will determine your position in the merit order list of each programme of your choice. The computer system will match (the "iteration process") the order of preference you have assigned to the study programmes of your choice with the position you have been placed in each merit order list of these programmes. You will then be made an offer of the highest priority on your programme list for which you have the required rating.

Merit order lists are compiled by the respective programmes' admissions tutors. Therefore determination of applicants' suitability for admission is entirely the decisions of the 9 participating-institutions under JUPAS and is entirely independent of the JUPAS Office.

Q
How are offers made?
A

Each programme will give you a rating in accordance with its criteria for selection.

A flash demo which briefly describes the iteration process can be downloaded from the section Useful Material.

Can I decline my offer in the Main Round / Clearing Round in order to be re-considered in the Subsequent Round(s)?
A

NO. If you decline your offer in the Main Round / Clearing Round, you will NOT be re-considered for admission to any other programmes under JUPAS in the same year.

Please refer to section Main Round Offer and Clearing Round Offer.

Q
When and how will the Subsequent Rounds offer results be announced?

A

YES. If you decline offers or fail to accept an offer in the Subsequent Rounds, you may be further considered for another offer in the other rounds only if vacancies are still available. The offers which you have previously declined will be offered to other applicant(s) in the Subsequent Rounds.

Please refer to section Subsequent Rounds Offer.

Q
I have fulfilled the minimum entrance requirements of a programme. Why is it that I am not given an offer by the programme?
A

Admission to the institutions is on a competitive basis, since the number of places available is far less than the number of eligible applicants. In this regard, satisfying the minimum entrance requirement of an institution or a programme does not therefore guarantee admission.

Q
I have obtained better level(s) / grade(s) in my HKDSE than my classmate, and we have both selected the same programmes. Why is it that he / she has received an offer but I did not?
A

Your HKDSE level(s) / grade(s) alone do not determine whether you will enter an institution of your choice. Other factors come into consideration such as information contained in your application form, and for some programmes, interview(s) and / or test(s), banding of programme choices, overall grades achieved by other applicants in the current year, and the number of applicants applying to the programme, etc. It is therefore not appropriate to only compare grades between applicants.

HKDSE Appeal
Q
How can I appeal against my HKDSE results?
A

You have to check with the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority (HKEAA) (Tel: 3628 8860). Appeal results will be announced by the HKEAA on 20 August 2012*.

Q
What should I do if I have HKDSE results revised in overall level (s) / grade(s) and wish to be re-considered for an offer / a "better" offer?
A

You can submit a request for re-consideration of your application on 21 August 2012* (9:00 am – 6:00 pm).

To submit a request for re-consideration, you are required to login onto your account at the JUPAS online application system, using your login name and the password you have previously selected.

Please refer to section HKDSE Appeal Cases.

Q
Can I submit a request for re-consideration if I am given an offer in the Main Round?
A

Yes. You can submit a request for re-consideration based on your revised HKDSE level(s) / grade(s) regardless of whether you have been made an offer or have accepted an offer in the Main Round or not.

Q
Should I accept the Main Round Offer while I appeal against my HKDSE results?
A

If you already have been made an offer in the Main Round and if you wish to accept this offer, our advice is that you SHOULD accept this Main Round offer while your request for re-consideration is pending, because this is the only offer you will receive in the case that you do not receive a "better" offer.

Please note that if you are given a "better" offer (i.e. a higher preference programme of your choice, and which is also the FINAL offer) on the strength of the revised level (s) / grade(s), your original offer in the Main Round will be withdrawn.

Please refer to section HKDSE Appeal Cases.

Q
If I am given a "better" offer, can I choose to accept either the original offer or the "better" offer?
A

No. If you are given a "better" offer (i.e. a higher preference programme of your choice, and which is also the FINAL offer) on the strength of the revised HKDSE level (s) / grade(s), your original offer in the Main Round will be withdrawn. You will be required to accept the "better" offer. In this regard, if you are already satisfied with your Main Round offer, there is no need for you to go through the procedures as specified here.

*Subject to changes.
