ENGINEERING

Short Description

Engineering is a discipline focused on problem solving. It is the art of applying scientific and mathematical principles together with innovations to develop technologies that benefit mankind. In 1991, The Faculty of Engineering was formally established under the leadership of Professor Charles Kao, former Vice-Chancellor of CUHK and 2009 Nobel Laureate in Physics. Since its inception, the Faculty is committed to the education of future leaders in Engineering, the pursuit of knowledge at the frontier of modern technology, and the application of technology to meet societal and human needs.

Under the broad-based admission scheme, the Faculty admits applicants to 6 of its undergraduate programmes.

Students admitted will not be assigned to any major in their first year of study. While students are studying common foundation courses in the first year, they will have more time to take a closer look at the features of different engineering programmes. The Faculty will assign experienced academic advisors to students so as to offer them advice and assistance with regard to their academic development, course selection and life adjustment, etc. After the first year of study, eligible students will be invited to declare as their major one of the 6 programmes below:

• Computer Science
• Computer Engineering
• Information Engineering
• Mathematics and Information Engineering
• Mechanical and Automation Engineering
• Systems Engineering and Engineering Management

Students can prioritise their choice of majors according to their interests. Students with outstanding HKDSE results or excellent academic performance in their first year of study are guaranteed of their first choice of major. All other eligible students will go through a centralised major allocation process, in which preferences of students will remain the most important consideration, provided that the respective programmes have adequate teaching resources and facilities for quality education.

Faculty Enhancement Programmes

With a focus on nurturing leaders in engineering and technology, the Faculty regularly updates the professional study programmes and continuously upgrades the teaching facilities. A range of enhancement programmes is offered to train students to be multi-talented engineers. These enhancement programmes include:

  • Engineering Leadership, Innovation, Technology and Entrepreneurship Stream (ELITE Stream), which aims to strengthen students' problem solving skills, intellectual curiosity and critical thinking ability by taking up challenging coursework. The ELITE stream record will be officially recorded on academic transcript for those who successfully completed all requirements;
  • a work-study scheme, under which students can spend one term or a full year working as a full-time employee in a programme-related company to equip themselves with practical experiences;
  • an engineering student exchange programme, which offers engineering students opportunities for overseas exchange study in order to widen their horizon, enhance their language ability, and train them to become more independent;
  • a research internship programme, which prepares motivated and high-caliber students for postgraduate studies and a research career by offering them early training in research skills.

Remarks:

The Engineering (broad-based) programme admits applicants to the undergraduate programmes below:

• Computer Science
• Computer Engineering
• Information Engineering
• Mathematics and Information Engineering
• Mechanical and Automation Engineering
• Systems Engineering and Engineering Management

Students admitted through the Engineering (broad-based) programme will not be assigned to any major in their first year of study. After completion of the first year of study, students are required to declare their major of study. The Faculty will try to match students’ preferences to the resources and facilities (e.g. lab facilities) available.

Calculation of scores for applicants with more than 1 sitting in HKDSE Examination

Most programmes offered by CUHK consider the best results in the same subject taken by a candidate in more than one sitting of HKDSE.  Some programmes may have specific arrangements and the admission scores of candidates seeking admission on the strength of results from more than one sitting of HKDSE may be adjusted.  Details of calculation of scores in more than one sitting of HKDSE for the 2018-19 entry will be finalised and posted at the admissions website (www.cuhk.edu.hk/adm).
