Short Description

The Department of Economics and Finance provides solid training in both the theory and application of economics and finance. The Department aims to equip graduates with cutting-edge knowledge in modern economics and finance and to provide Hong Kong with the young financial executives, economists and business leaders it needs. The mission of the Department is to be a centre of excellence in research and teaching, using economics and finance for business and public sector decision making in Hong Kong, Mainland China and other economies in the world.

The Department currently offers the following two majors:

  • BBA Business Economics
  • BBA Finance

Why BBA Business Economics?

BBA Business Economics provides solid training in economic strategies for improving business operations, government policies and economic forecasting. Students are open for a wide range of career options, e.g. corporate strategist, management consultant, economist, private banker, investment advisor.

Why BBA Finance?

BBA Finance provides rigorous training in asset valuation, portfolio and risk management, derivative securities, global investment and quantitative methods. The programme prepares you for key financial management positions in business and government sectors.

Career Prospects

Graduates are ready to develop career as corporate strategist, management consultant, economist, private banker, investment advisor and key financial management positions in business and government sectors.

Admission Arrangements

JUPAS applicants will be considered for admission to first-year studies at the Department of Economics and Finance. Students will enter a major (current major options: Business Economics; Finance) after one year of study. The top 40% of students# will have a free choice of majors offered by the Department. The other 60% of students will be allocated a major within the Department, subject to the availability of places and the selection criteria set by individual majors. Please click here for details.

Notes for Elective Subject(s):

  • Besides Category A elective subjects, Mathematics extended modules (M1/M2) and Category C other language subject (at grade E or above) can also be used to meet the elective requirement. If students take both M1 and M2, they are counted as one subject only.
  • Applied Learning (ApL) subjects are not counted as elective subjects.

Notes:

  • Liberal Studies would be used as the alternative of the core subject requirement of Citizenship and Social Development.
  • Unspecified electives may include Category A elective subjects, Mathematics extended modules (M1/M2) (except for JS1801) and Category C other language subjects (at grade E or above) (except for JS1200, JS1201, JS1217, JS1801, JS1805JS1806 and JS1807). If students take both M1 and M2, they are counted as one subject only.
  • Applied Learning (ApL) subjects are not counted as elective subjects, except for JS1041, JS1042, JS1043, JS1044, JS1805JS1806 and JS1807.
  • Please refer to the minimum entrance requirements webpage for details.
  • Applicants who are marginally failed to meet the entrance requirements of the programme may still have opportunity of admission. CityU will continue the flexibility towards the minimum entrance requirements for JUPAS applicants in 2024/25 entry. The details of flexible admission arrangement will be announced in due course.

Calculation of scores for applicants with more than 1 sitting in HKDSE Examination

CityU accepts repeat results and will use the best results in assessing whether applicants fulfil the entrance requirements and to calculate admission scores.
