Short Description

These programmes are five-year full-time programmes leading to the award of two degrees. The education degree provides students with a recognised teaching qualification, competent in teaching the Personal, Social and Humanities Education (PSHE) Key Learning Area in local schools.

Students will take the same General Education curriculum as other single-degree students of HKBU. The curriculum for Geography, History and Sociology is basically the same as the respective single-degrees. Academic staff of the Departments of Geography, History or Sociology will also be responsible for supervision of students’ Honours Projects at the final year. Students will be admitted into the programme on a broad-based basis and will choose their Major (Geography, History or Sociology) at the end of Year 1.

Unique Features 

The two degrees complement each other. The Major (Geography, History or Sociology) provides a solid foundation for the “pedagogical knowledge” that any subject teacher will need. The education degree develops students into competent teachers of PSHE subjects. Despite the tight study schedule and compact curriculum, students could still make use of credit units under “university electives” to pursue a minor (e.g. psychology, economics, Chinese).

Student Learning Experiences

Students will participate in one School Experience and two Supervised Teaching Practices in local schools. Satisfactory performance in these field practices is essential for the completion of the Bachelor of Education degree. Participation in foreign exchange coordinated by the International Office, and the one-semester off-campus programme organised by the Faculty of Social Sciences, are highly encouraged. Students will also have many opportunities to engage in service learning, such as acting as after-school tutors for primary school students.

Career Opportunities 

Graduates will be competent teachers with a qualification recognised by the Education Bureau. Besides joining the education field, graduates can also enter the civil service, the business sector, or other civil society organisations.

Notes for elective subjects:

1) One of the electives must be any Category A subjects including Extended Part of Mathematics (Module 1 or Module 2);

2) The other elective can be any of the following subjects:
    a) Category A subjects;
    b) Applied Learning subjects with "Attained with Distinction (I)" or above;
    c) Other Language subjects at Grade E or above.

  • The elective subjects must be Category A subjects (unless specified) excluding Extended Part of Mathematics (Module 1 or Module 2).
  • Individual programmes may consider Extended Part of Mathematics (Module 1 or Module 2), Category B subjects (Applied Learning) and/or Category C subjects (Other Languages) for fulfillment of elective requirement. Please refer to the programme entrance requirements of individual programmes for details.
