Short Description

The BA(Hons) Scheme in Design aims to educate innovative and mindful problem-solvers who are sensitive to social needs, and to equip them with the necessary intellectual, technical and managerial skills to facilitate their development as designers who will shape contemporary culture and invent desirable futures.

Remarks:
Students will be awarded one of the following titles upon successful completion of the graduation requirements of the discipline concerned:

  • BA(Hons) in Advertising Design (Stream Code: AD);
  • BA(Hons) in Communication Design (Stream Code: CD);
  • BA(Hons) in Environment and Interior Design (Stream Code: EID); or
  • BA(Hons) in Product Design (Stream Code: PRD).

There is no compulsory subject requirement. Preferred subjects with the highest weighting for admission score calculation include:
  • Chinese;
  • English;
  • Mathematics;
  • Liberal Studies;
  • Design and Applied Technology; and
  • Visual Arts.
  • Applied Learning Subjects (Subject to approval):
    • File and Video;
    • Film and Video Studies;
    • Image Design;
    • Innovative Product Design;
    • Interior Design; and
    • Multimedia Entertainment Studies.

Relevant Applied Learning subjects that can be considered for meeting the University entrance requirement and admission score calculation (Subject to approval) are:

  • Computer Game and Animation Design;

  • Entrepreneurship for SME;

  • Innovative Product Design;
  • Interior Design;
  • Jewellery and Accessories Design;
  • Jewellery Arts and Design;

  • Marketing in Global Trade;
  • Medical Laboratory Science;
  • Mobile and Online Apps Development;
  • Multimedia Entertainment Studies;

Normally, only those applicants who choose this programme as their Band A choice throughout the application process, and have fulfilled the University's minimum entrance requirements, will be considered.

All applicants are required to declare their intended choice of programme major before the aptitude test stage.

For BA(Hons) in Advertising Design and BA(Hons) in Communication Design, only those applicants who have participated in the aptitude test and portfolio submission in May/June of the year will be considered.

For BA(Hons) in Environment and Interior Design, and BA(Hons) in Product Design, only those applicants who have participated in the aptitude test in May/June of the year will be considered.

Applicants with top HKDSE scores will be exceptionally considered after HKDSE result announcement.

Flexibilities on admission selection are available as follows:

  1. Individual Broad Disciplines (BDs) / degree programmes will accept one relevant Applied Learning (ApL) subject for meeting the entrance requirements. An attainment at Attained with Distinction (I) level or above is required.
  2. Other Language subjects (i.e. Category C) offered in the HKDSE Examination will be accepted as elective subjects. Grade E or above is required.
  3. If students have taken both M1 and M2, they will only be considered as one subject and the best grade will be taken into consideration during admission selection.
  4. Students endorsed by schools for meeting EDB’s specified conditions and having achieved the required grade in Chinese in one of the following examinations will be regarded as obtaining a Level 3 in HKDSE Chinese for meeting our entrance requirements:

  5. No penalty is applied to applicants with multiple attempts in HKDSE Examination. Similar subjects are considered once and the best grade will be taken into consideration during admission selection.
  6. There is no compulsory subject requirement for our programmes. Preferred subjects, if applicable, are listed in the 'Entrance Requirements & Subject Weightings' section of individual programme entries. Satisfactory performance in preferred subjects will have a positive influence on admission selection. However, applicants who have not taken the preferred subjects will still be considered for admission but they may need to take relevant underpinning subjects after admission to PolyU.
  7. For admission to the BSc(Hons) in Nursing and BSc(Hons) in Mental Health Nursing, students must have Level 3 or above in at least two HKDSE elective subjects from Category A. Please refer to www.hkeaa.edu.hk/en/hkdse/assessment/subject_information/ for details of the HKDSE subject categories.

Calculation of scores for applicants with more than 1 sitting in HKDSE Examination

No penalty is applied to applicants with multiple attempts in HKDSE Examination. Similar subjects are considered once and the best grade will be taken into consideration during admission selection.
