GLOBAL STUDIES

Short Description

In response to the increased mobility of talent and integration of national markets, the Global Studies programme is designed to meet the rapidly rising demands for

  • global leadership to enhance global competitiveness of international corporations;
  • expertise in managing a culturally diverse work-force;
  • diplomatic skills to cope with international relations and geopolitics;
  • global citizenship to handle parochialism and its attendant symptoms (e.g., super-nationalism, terrorism); and
  • competences to deal with global environmental and health challenges (e.g., pollution, HIV, SARS).

As a premium undergraduate programme, Global Studies aims at nurturing future global leaders, with a sharp focus on cultivating a global mindset, which includes the following components:

  • Global consciousness;
  • Ability to think globally and act locally;
  • Multilingual and multicultural competencies;
  • Skills to manage global talent;
  • Skills to cope with international relations.

There are five concentrations in the programme:

  • Global Media
  • Cultures and Societies
  • World Politics
  • Sustainability and Environment
  • Global Economy

The programme contains the following major components:

  • Faculty Package
  • Resident study overseas
  • Foreign language
  • Two concentration areas from 5 options
  • Internship
  • Directed multidisciplinary research project/thesis

Possible placements of graduates include multinational corporations, particularly those in the areas of diversity management and international business; government and NGOs; global organisations (e.g., WHO, World Bank, UN); education institutions, particularly those in the domain of multicultural education; graduate studies in premium Global Studies and International Relations programmes.

Note 2:
The two subjects may include:
(i) 2 New Senior Secondary elective subjects#; or
(ii) 1 New Senior Secondary elective subject and Mathematics (Extended Part) Module I or Module II.    

#Other Language subjects (Grade E or above) will be considered as an unspecified elective subject in fulfilling (i) above.

"Attained with Distinction" in Applied Learning subjects will be accepted by some programmes as an extra subject for awarding bonus points. For details, please click here.     

Calculation of scores for applicants with more than 1 sitting in HKDSE Examination

Most programmes offered by CUHK consider the best results in the same subject taken by a candidate in more than one sitting of HKDSE.  Some programmes may have specific arrangements and the admission scores of candidates seeking admission on the strength of results from more than one sitting of HKDSE may be adjusted.  Details of calculation of scores in more than one sitting of HKDSE for the 2018-19 entry will be finalised and posted at the admissions website (www.cuhk.edu.hk/adm).
