Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering 土木及環境工程學系

CIVL

Short Description

Today’s civil engineers play a pivotal role in designing and developing ingenious and sustainable solutions that will drive modern society. As we continue to face challenges such as impacts from climate change, there is an ever more imminent need to innovate to ensure that our future will be safer, greener and more resilient. With this in mind, the Civil and Environmental Engineering programs at HKUST are designed to equip students with comprehensive knowledge and skills to excel as civil engineering leaders.

Industry and internship training, a final-year project, and a capstone design project are integral to our curricula, giving students opportunities to gain professional experience and apply theory to real-life situations. In addition, our programs particularly emphasize integrating traditional civil engineering training with cutting-edge technologies. Students will have opportunities to explore state-of-the-art innovations such as artificial intelligence (AI), big data, and digital automation to design and optimize infrastructure, build and operate smarter and more sustainable cities, and align science and technology with needs of the Anthropocene. Through combining practical and conventional knowledge with new, transformative research, our programs will train students to stand out from the rest in an ever-evolving world.

The Department currently offers the following two majors and one minor:

  • BEng in Civil Engineering
  • BEng in Civil and Environmental Engineering
  • Minor in Smart City

The curricula of both majors are identical in the first two years, after which students will declare their major as either Civil Engineering or Civil and Environmental Engineering. Those majoring in Civil Engineering will take more advanced structural and geotechnical courses, while those in Civil and Environmental Engineering will take more advanced environmental courses. In the third year of study, students may also opt for the Minor in Smart City, which comprises courses covering various issues in smart city development.

Remarks:

Students interested in exploring new technologies and emerging topics may opt into the Extended Major in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Digital Media and Creative Arts (DMCA), or Sustainability (SUST) after Year 1. Students can only enroll in one of the three Extended Majors. Those enrolled will take extra credits in their chosen Extended Major alongside their Major Program. By following a structured pathway, students can complete both the Major and the Extended Major within 4 years. Students who are interested in the Extended Major in AI may also choose the School-based program choice JS5282 Engineering with Extended Major in AI.
