Short Description

The Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is committed to excellence in teaching and world-class research in modern technologies integral to our society. Technologies such as 5/6G wireless networks, wearables, micro-displays for augmented reality, cameras and sensors for drones and autonomous systems, and artificial intelligence running on integrated circuits fabricated on semiconductor chips have transformed our ways of communicating with people and machines, interacting with the environment and with the world around us, transporting people and goods, among many emerging and unforeseen possibilities. Our curriculum enables students to master fundamental and frontier knowledge in core technology areas such as microelectronics, photonics, integrated circuits, artificial intelligence, data science, signal processing, control and robotic systems, wireless communications and networks, and quantum information. Hands-on project experiences that characterize our teaching and research programs are supported by world-class laboratories and central research facilities, including the Nanosystem Fabrication Facility, the Materials Characterization and Preparation Facility, and the Institute of Integrated Circuits and Systems.

Graduates of ECE go on to a variety of career opportunities in engineering and high-technology industries, business and management, as well as to higher studies locally or overseas to become leaders and innovators of transformative technologies.

Students admitted into the ECE Department will declare a major in either of the following degrees:

  • BEng in Electronic Engineering (ELEC)

The ELEC major is a general degree program with a broad coverage of all areas in ECE. It offers a comprehensive curriculum of electronic engineering principles and applications in microelectronics, photonics, integrated circuits, artificial intelligence, data science, signal processing, control and robotic systems, wireless communications and networks, and quantum engineering. Students may explore these different areas of interest that span materials, devices, and systems. Graduates of BEng in ELEC are well-equipped to assume technical and administrative roles in a variety of electronics-related industries, such as machine learning engineer, semiconductor chip designer, communications engineer, robotics scientist, bioinformatics analyst, and automation systems architect.

  • BEng in Microelectronics and Integrated Circuits (MEIC)

The MEIC major offers specialized educational experiences and co-curricular training opportunities in Microelectronics and Integrated Circuits (ICs) for the burgeoning research and development fields related to hardware for artificial intelligence technology, wireless and satellite communications, power devices and circuits for electric vehicles and data centers, sensors for the Internet of Everything, wearables, personal healthcare devices, micro-displays for augmented reality and virtual reality, etc., which are under intense development both regionally and globally. MEIC emphasizes hands-on project components, including cleanroom fabrication of semiconductor chips, IC layout design and tape-out, and device/circuit measurements, through leveraging our unique shared central research facilities in Hong Kong. Graduates of BEng in MEIC can pursue careers in semiconductor microelectronics and optoelectronics design, fabrication and advanced packaging processes, IC and system design, semiconductor chip technology and product developments, semiconductor chip testing and quality control, technology marketing,  intellectual property protection, and various other fields within the fast-expanding microelectronics and IC industry ecosystem.

Remarks:
Students interested in exploring new technologies and emerging topics may opt into the Extended Major in Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Digital Media and Creative Arts (DMCA) after Year 1. Students can only enroll in either one of the two Extended Majors. Those enrolled will take extra credits in AI or DMCA alongside their Major Program. By following a structured pathway, students can complete both the Major and the Extended Major within 4 years.

Students interested in the Extended Major in AI may also choose the School-based program choice JS5282 Engineering with Extended Major in AI (ENGG+AI). However, the pathway of entering BEng in MEIC through ENGG+AI is expected to be competitive, students seriously interested should apply directly to ECE.
