Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering 機械及航空航天工程學系
MAE
Short Description
The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) offers two undergraduate programs: BEng in Mechanical Engineering and BEng in Aerospace Engineering. Both programs aim to equip students with the fundamental knowledge and practical skills required for a successful engineering career. Our programs foster self-directed learning, designed to produce holistically educated professionals who can not only tackle scientific and technical challenges but also think critically and adapt to a rapidly changing world.
The MAE Department offers a holistic educational journey that encompasses:
- A robust foundation in core engineering principles.
- Exposure to cutting-edge technologies and industrial experiences.
- Hands-on laboratories and design projects.
- An integrative experience in the fourth year: either a year-long team design project or a five-month Co-Op placement at an industry partner.
This carefully crafted blend of theory and practice ensures that MAE graduates are well-prepared to either enter the job market as competent mechanical/aerospace engineers or pursue advanced studies at the postgraduate level. At MAE, we are committed to shaping the next generation of innovative engineers who will drive progress in our field and make meaningful contributions to society.
Students admitted by the MAE Department may declare one of the following major options:
- BEng in Mechanical Engineering
Our Mechanical Engineering program follows a structured three-stage approach. The first stage establishes a strong foundation in core engineering principles. The second stage combines advanced theoretical knowledge with hands-on laboratories and exposure to emerging technologies. In the final stage, students integrate engineering science with practical applications via industrial placements and team projects. Students can tailor their education by specializing in energy systems, mechanical design, advanced materials, or research. This versatile preparation enables graduates to excel in diverse roles, from design and project management to research and development in industries such as building services, transportation, green energy, and smart manufacturing. The program also provides an excellent foundation for those pursuing advanced degrees and research careers.
- BEng in Aerospace Engineering
Our Aerospace Engineering program offers a comprehensive education in aircraft design, aerodynamics, materials, propulsion, avionics, and more. Students master both foundational principles and cutting-edge developments in sustainable aviation and emerging technologies, with emphasis on hands-on laboratories (e.g. in the HKUST Wind Tunnel) and industry-relevant skills. Graduates excel in diverse roles across the aerospace sector, from aircraft design and development to flight test engineering and avionics integration. The aerospace industry’s robust growth, driven by sustainable aviation initiatives, space exploration projects, and urban air mobility, offers exceptional career opportunities for our graduates.
Remarks:
For students specifically interested in Artificial Intelligence (AI), we offer two pathways:
- Adding the Extended Major in AI to an existing MAE program after Year 1;
- Selecting the School-based program (JS5282 Engineering with Extended Major in AI) at university entry.
Both options provide balanced coverage of AI technologies while maintaining strong foundations in the primary engineering discipline.
Students interested in exploring new technologies and emerging topics may also opt into the Extended Major in Digital Media and Creative Arts (DMCA) or Sustainability (SUST) after Year 1.
Enrolled students will take extra credits in their chosen Extended Major alongside their Major Program. By following a structured pathway, students can complete both the Major and the Extended Major within 4 years.
Please note that students can only enroll in one of the three Extended Majors.
