BASc
Short Description
The BASc programme is designed for intellectually ambitious students who want to take control of their learning and develop a broad set of scholarly skills in order to become leaders across a diverse range of fields to meet important global challenges. The BASc aims to equip students with social intelligence, creative problem-solving and analytical skills (both qualitative and quantitative), communication skills, ethical responsibility, and nurture them on how to take an interdisciplinary perspective in understanding our world. Global problems won’t get solved with a traditional curriculum; the BASc programme helps students to make connections between disciplines, with a view to changing our world. The programme is built on two pedagogical principles. First, students undertake high-quality training from different disciplines: Social Sciences, Sciences, Arts and Humanities. Second, students develop the intellectual toolkit to learn how to intersect disciplines and integrate them through case studies, capstone experiences, and learning from thought leaders, movers and shakers in relevant employment sectors and professions.
The curriculum consists of three components. Interdisciplinary Studies major: Students take three interdisciplinary core courses which are co-designed and co-taught by teachers spanning the three faculties, the internship and also courses within two pathways:
(1) Cultures/ Societies and (2) Physical World/ Biological/ Human Sciences.
Second major/ minors/ electives: Students can pursue any combination of subjects or a second major of their choice across faculties (e.g., physics, history, psychology, political studies, marketing or management).
Other essential learning: Students take the BASc core courses and fulfil the language and common core requirements of the undergraduate curriculum.
Students will have individual guidance from their academic tutor who will help them design a course of study that meets their passions and provides a coherent course of academic study.
Students also have the opportunity to pitch to our in-house BAScLab where they can gain finance for their impactful and collaborative research ideas. Our Lab Manager will coach students in the development and refinement of their ideas and guide them through project delivery, ensuring that students are able to translate their learning to ideas with real-world impact.
