Bachelor of Arts and Sciences in Global Health and Development 文理學士(環球衞生及發展)

BASc(GHD)

Short Description

The BASc(GHD) programme, the first of its kind in Asia, provides students with the knowledge and competencies necessary to effectively engage with today’s rapidly evolving, international and interdisciplinary environment and to respond to complex global health and development challenges.  This highly innovative interdisciplinary programme will focus on the impact of major global trends such as globalisation, population growth, ageing, urbanisation, and climate change, in which health and development are intertwined.

This programme is suitable for students who aspire to:

  • learn in an interdisciplinary environment;
  • solve complex problems;
  • be global health and development changers; and
  • be global citizens and leaders in the community

A distinctive feature of the programme is a compulsory capstone, during which students will be placed into an international health and development agency, supranational, multinational, consultancy group, or non-governmental organisation (NGO) for a 6-month field placement.  Through the international placement, students will gain first-hand experience in addressing health and development issues faced by other cultures, countries, or populations.  By straddling the summer in between years 3 and 4 and extending through the first semester of year 4 (e.g. from June to December), the field placement will offer students an opportunity to synthesise and apply the knowledge acquired from coursework.

Graduates will be competitive candidates in a wide range of global health and development related organisations; be informed citizens of the world; and be prepared to work on complex problems with colleagues from multiple disciplines in multicultural contexts in both private and public organisations.

Calculation of scores for applicants with more than 1 sitting in HKDSE Examination

In general, most of the programmes offered by HKU consider the best results achieved by candidates in different combination of sittings, except for a few programmes which only consider the latest results.  Few programmes may also impose a penalty on HKDSE repeaters.  The policy on the calculation of scores in combined sittings of HKDSE for the 2020-21 exercise will be finalized at a later stage, which will be posted on our website https://www.hku.hk/dse.
