ENGG
Short Description
The HKUST School of Engineering is the most comprehensive Engineering School in Hong Kong. The School has a strong international reputation and consistently ranks high among major engineering schools around the world. In 2023 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, HKUST was ranked No. 26 globally in Engineering, which is the highest ranking given to a Hong Kong engineering school.
The School of Engineering adopted School-based admission. In the first year of study, students will undergo fundamentals embracing general education and essential foundations. In the School of Engineering, upon completion of the first year, students will be able to select any engineering major from a wide range of programs. All Bachelor of Engineering degree programs are accredited by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE).*
The four-year curriculum requires around 120 credits. The curriculum provides a more student focused and broader program structure with a large degree of flexibility which enables students an all-round educational experience and better prepares them for diverse careers. The curriculum is designed to help students identify their interest and career aspiration.
The Centre for Engineering Education Innovation (E2I) was established to support engineering students exclusively and help them achieve a successful year at the beginning of their university study. Introduced by E2I, the peer mentoring program offers first-year students counseling support and helps them understand their own interest and academic strengths.
*Please refer to the HKIE website for the latest accreditation status of individual programs.
Students admitted into the School of Engineering upon completion of the first year of study will enroll into one of the bachelor programs offered by School, which may cover the following disciplines:
- Aerospace Engineering
- Bioengineering
- Chemical Engineering
- Chemical and Environmental Engineering
- Civil Engineering
- Civil and Environmental Engineering
- Computer Engineering
- Computer Science
- Decision Analytics
- Electronic Engineering
- Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management

Besides, engineering students may also apply to pursue a Dual Degree or an interdisciplinary program after one year of study:
- BEng & BBA Dual Degree Program in Technology and Management
- BSc in Data Science and Technology
- BSc in Environmental Management and Technology
- BSc in Individualized Interdisciplinary Major
- BSc in Integrative Systems and Design
- BSc in Risk Management and Business Intelligence
Students in ENGG program may also opt into the Engineering with an Extended Major in Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Extended Major in Digital Media and Creative Arts (DMCA) after Year 1. Students enrolled in an Extended Major will take extra credits in AI or DMCA in addition to their Major Program. By following a structured pathway, students are able to complete both the Major and the Extended Major within 4 years. Students interested in ENGG+AI may also choose the direct program choice JS5282.
Through the Extended Major in AI, students will have access to fundamental courses in AI as well as a wide range of electives that cater for different backgrounds of students such as machine learning, computer vision, data visualization, etc. The Extended Major in DMCA, on the other hand, provides students with training in 2 main domains, Digital Media and Creative Arts. Under each domain, there will be numerous electives for students to choose from, e.g. computer music, game programming, digital design for Digital Media, whereas for Creative Arts, there are electives in the areas of Music, Literature and Film, Design, Studio and Performing Arts, etc.
