Short Description

The Bachelor of Nursing (BNURS) is a five-year full-time programme leading to an honours degree of the University.  Its objective is to provide a comprehensive, holistic nursing education and nurture competent nurse leaders with an international outlook.

The credit-based curriculum is broad-based and multi-disciplinary, and is designed to introduce the bio-psycho-social aspects of health and nursing care which provides a balance between the broad areas of nursing, biological, behavioural and social sciences.  It enables students to obtain knowledge through the study of different disciplines, and to develop critical mind, interpersonal skills and an understanding of the socio-cultural context in which nursing is practised in Hong Kong.  The curriculum also integrates different nursing components in order to train generic nurses who can work in different health care settings.

The degree programme emphasises the integration of theories and practice.  Students are exposed to a variety of clinical environments throughout the programme.  Experiential learning of clinical skills is under the supervision of experienced teaching staff.  The process of teaching and learning is directed by nursing academics in the Faculty with a wide range of expertise, supported by the excellent facilities in various departments of the Medical Faculty and clinical settings.

Students will be able to broaden their learning experience with a broad spectrum of students including medicine, pharmacy, Chinese medicine and biomedical sciences through the Faculty Inter-professional Team-Based Learning (IPTBL) and Patient Care Project (PCP), etc. and will be provided with sponsorships to participate in a wide ranging exchange programmes in the top overseas Universities for 2-4 weeks.  Students may also be considered for awards to undertake research internships locally, in the Mainland or overseas under the Undergraduate Research Fellowship Programme.

The curriculum includes various courses in each year with an aim to better equip students with the essential knowledge and skills to be capable of working in different settings.  The main areas covered are Nursing Core Courses, Nursing Care of Specialised Populations, Theoretical Foundations for Nursing Practice, Foundations in Nursing Research, Nursing Electives, Nursing Practica, Life Sciences and Behavioural Sciences.  This curriculum structure allows maximum longitudinal and lateral correlation between courses.  The teaching and learning strategies facilitate integration of theoretical knowledge and the application of learning to nursing practice.

  1. "Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education” is referred to as “HKDSE”.
  2. "Attained with Distinction” in Applied Learning subjects will be used as additional supporting information. In the meantime, student learning experiences in Applied Learning subjects may be considered within the context of other learning experiences in their application.
  3. Other Language subjects will be used as unspecified elective subjects. The minimum requirement is Grade E.

Calculation of scores for applicants with more than 1 sitting in HKDSE Examination

In general, most of the programmes offered by HKU consider the best results achieved by candidates in different combination of sittings, except for a few programmes which only consider the latest results.  Few programmes may also impose a penalty on HKDSE repeaters.  The policy on the calculation of scores in combined sittings of HKDSE for the 2019-20 exercise will be finalized at a later stage, which will be posted on our website
