Engineering with an Extended Major in Artificial Intelligence 工程學– 延伸主修人工智能
ENGG+AI
Short Description
In an era where artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping our world in unprecedented ways, from facial recognition unlocking our smartphones to movie-making using generative AI, the demand for AI expertise is soaring. The "ENGG+AI" program is at the forefront of this revolution, offering an extended major that integrates cross-disciplinary AI technology applications into the core curriculum. This innovative approach ensures our students are well-prepared to thrive in a future where the ability to harness AI in a wide range of domains will provide a competitive edge and positively impact to their careers.
The HKUST School of Engineering is the most comprehensive Engineering School in Hong Kong. The School has a strong international reputation and consistently ranks high among major engineering schools worldwide. In 2023 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, HKUST was ranked No. 26 globally in Engineering, which is the highest ranking awarded to a Hong Kong engineering school.
The extended major in AI is designed to equip students with the essential knowledge and practical skills in cutting-edge AI technology, in addition to cross-disciplinary design thinking and problem solving skills. Students will take approximately one additional course per semester throughout the 4 years to complete the extended major, culminating in a final-year capstone project that integrates their professional engineering training with the application of AI in their areas of expertise. Upon satisfactory completion, students will earn a “Bachelor of Engineering degree in one of the engineering disciplines with an Extended Major in Artificial Intelligence”.
The ENGG+AI program offers a dynamic and flexible educational journey. Students are welcomed into a school-based curriculum without the immediate pressure of selecting a major. The first year is dedicated to exploring various engineering disciplines through foundational courses, allowing students to make an informed decision about their major. At the same time, they will join a community of like-minded students in honing their programming and AI skills. At the end of the first year, they will select their engineering major among the following choices:
- BEng in Aerospace Engineering
- BEng in Bioengineering
- BEng in Chemical Engineering
- BEng in Civil Engineering
- BEng in Civil and Environmental Engineering
- BEng in Decision Analytics
- BEng in Energy and Environmental Engineering
- BEng in Electronic Engineering
- BEng in Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management
- BEng in Mechanical Engineering
- BEng in Microelectronics and Integrated Circuits
They may also apply to join several other interdisciplinary and joint-School majors offered by HKUST, including:
- BSc in Data Science and Technology
- BSc in Environmental Management and Technology
- BSc in Individualized Interdisciplinary Major
- BSc in Integrative Systems and Design
- BSc in Risk Management and Business Intelligence
- Dual Degree (BEng & BBA) Program in Technology and Management
Remarks:
Students who have decided on their engineering major should also consider selecting the department-based program choices. Please refer to program choices JS5220 CBE, JS5230 CIVL, JS5240 CSE, JS5250 CPEG, JS5260 IEDA, JS5270 MAE and JS5212 CPEG.
Students also have the flexibility to drop their extended major in AI at any point during their studies, and graduate only with their primary engineering major.
A modest number of places will be reserved for students to enter the major programs of BEng in Computer Science, BEng in Artificial Intelligence and BEng in Computer Engineering from ENGG+AI should they decide that they would like to focus solely on AI and associated topics, without pursuing another engineering major. The extended major in AI is not compatible with these three majors and will be automatically dropped for these students. This pathway of entering those major programs through ENGG+AI is expected to be competitive.
