Short Description
The Biotechnology and Business (BIBU) program (JS5811) is jointly offered by the School of Science and the School of Business and Management. It aims to groom students with a hybrid interest in both biotechnology applications and business operations. It offers students a broad-based learning experience that encompasses essential life science and biotechnology knowledge, as well as complementary business know-how, including accounting, finance, economics, marketing, operations management. It also enhances students’ creative and critical thinking abilities while helping them develop a global outlook on biotechnology development and applications, thereby laying a solid foundation of knowledge and skills to develop, manage, and market biotechnology initiatives.
The goal of the program is to nurture competent students to become industry professionals who possess both technical knowledge and business mind. Ideal candidates will be students who are technically competent, interested in biotechnology applications, as well as eager to develop a leadership career in the biotechnology or life science-related industries.
The holistic BIBU experience prepares students to excel in any career path they aspire to. This program offers rigorous training in both biotechnology and business, which is designed to prepare students for successful leadership positions within the biotechnology industry. Potential employers include multinational pharmaceutical companies, vendors of biotechnology products/services, consulting firms focusing on the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. A wide range of career opportunities are available in both private and public sectors.
Remarks:
Students can apply for the BIBU program through direct choice in JUPAS, or apply for transfer from the Science (Group B) program (JS5103) of the School of Science, or any Business School programs of the School of Business and Management into BIBU after their first year of study. Students interested in BIBU are encouraged to include both Biotechnology and Business (BIBU) program (JS5811) and either Science (Group B) program (JS5103) or Business and Management program (JS5300) in their JUPAS program choices.

- Non-Chinese speaking (NCS) students may use an alternative Chinese subject, an HKDSE Other Language subject, or an HKDSE Applied Learning Chinese subject to satisfy the University’s Chinese language requirement.
- The result(s) of Liberal Studies in previous sitting(s) will also be considered in HKUST General Entrance Requirement. Level 2 or above is required.
"Attained" level in Citizenship and Social Development and the result(s) of Liberal Studies will not be considered in the admissions score calculation. - The above subjects refer to Category A subjects.
- Score 3 or above in Category C (Other Languages) subjects will also be considered as 2nd Elective. Please refer to https://join.hkust.edu.hk/admissions/jupas/ for the conversion of HKDSE level/grades to scores.
Calculation of scores for applicants with more than 1 sitting in HKDSE Examination
Once the minimum entrance requirements have been met, the best results achieved in all sittings will be used for calculating admissions scores.
