Student Development

Student Exchange Programmes (

Students are encouraged to participate in Student Exchange Programmes to widen their horizons and to acquire the necessary global-mindedness during their university education. Over the years, Lingnan has established over 250 exchange partnerships with higher education institutions across continents, offering more than 700 exchange opportunities each academic year. Student Exchange Programmes are an integral part of liberal arts education and also an important journey for students’ personal development, soul-searching and path-finding. Students selected to join the Student Exchange Programmes will be given necessary briefings and/or training to facilitate them to get the most from their once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Service-Learning Programmes (

Service-Learning (S-L) involves the integration of formal academic studies, meaningful service and self-reflection. It includes a service project that contributes to the well-being and development of individuals and communities by addressing social or environmental issues. Service projects are designed to facilitate critical thinking and knowledge transfer and thus reinforce classroom learning and inspire students’ self-reflection. As a graduation requirement, students are required to complete a service project of at least 30 hours (including preparatory service training) in conjunction with an academic course that has S-L elements.

Integrated Learning Programme (

The Integrated Learning Programme (ILP) is one of the signature programmes of the University which aims at enriching students’ learning experiences, enabling students to interact with others more effectively, inspiring their creative thinking as well as expanding their intellectual and cultural horizons.  With a rich array of programmes, the ILP covers six learning domains: civic education, intellectual development, physical education, social and emotional development, aesthetic development and hostel education.

Information Technology Fluency Programme (
The Information Technology Fluency (ITF) Programme, consisting of an ITF Test which is a graduation requirement and an online ITF Self-learning Programme, aims at equipping students with necessary IT skills for their studies and future career development.

First Year Experience Programme (

The First Year Experience Programme (FYEP) is part of the ILP designed specially for first year undergraduates. It aims at assisting first year students to make a successful transition to the intellectual, social and cultural community of the University. FYEP comprises of five components: self-understanding, university study, peer mentoring, leadership development and hostel education.

Mentoring Schemes

Four mentoring schemes, namely Peer Mentoring Programme (PMP), Lingnanian Career Mentoring Programme (LCMP), Leadership Mentoring Programme (LMP) and Police Mentorship Programme (PMP) are administered by the Office of Student Affairs to cater for the developmental needs of students at different learning stages.

Counselling Services (

Counselling services aim to enhance students’ personal development for a rewarding university experience; promote skills and attitudes for a smooth transition and adaptation to university life; and assist students to embrace challenges and achieve academic success.


Teaching Facilities

Teaching facilities are situated in the academic buildings, and include lecture theatres, lecture rooms, audio-visual rooms, tutorial rooms, computer laboratories and language laboratories.

Library (

The Library houses a collection of over 545,000 volumes. In addition to print books, the Library also has a large e-book collection of more than 1,350,000 items. The Library currently subscribes to over 800 print journals and approximately 91,668 online journals, as well as 317 databases. The Lee Hak Kan Multimedia and Language Learning Centre in the Library provides more than 194,000 multimedia resources. The Library allows users 24-hour remote access through the Digital Library and is also a participant in the Hong Kong Academic Library Link (HKALL), a resource-sharing system that allows users to search the catalogues of participating Hong Kong university libraries and borrow books directly from them.

IT Facilities (

The University Campus Network supports campus-wide IT services for the Web, email, Internet, intranet, as well as research, academic and administrative applications. Mobile wireless access is available for multiple types of portable devices, covering all areas of the campus and the student hostels.

Integrated IT Learning & Self-study Centre and Computer Laboratories

The Integrated IT Learning & Self-study Centre with over 80 computers, a study room and three discussion rooms provides 24-hour access for all students. Computer laboratories with more than 570 Internet-enabled personal computers are located throughout the campus.

Sports and Recreational Facilities (
The University has an indoor sports complex with a wide range of sporting facilities on the main campus.  The gymnasium, of the size of two volleyball courts, has the flexibility for other types of games, such as badminton, basketball and handball. In addition, there are two squash courts, a table-tennis room, a multi-purpose room, a fitness room and changing facilities. As part of the complex, there are also an outdoor Olympic standard swimming pool and a tennis court.

In addition to the above facilities, the University has a Multi-purpose Sports Ground situated across the road from the main campus. The Sports Ground also houses a colour score board system, an overhead lighting system and a student activities centre which has three multi-purpose rooms and changing facilities.

Student Hostels (

Hostel life is an essential part of Lingnan's liberal arts education. The University offers affordable accommodation for all its undergraduate students in ten hostels providing around 2,600 residential places with most of the air-conditioned rooms shared by two students with some catering for three students.  Each room has LAN ports for each student. Each floor of the hostel blocks has a lounge area, a pantry and shared lavatory/shower facilities. Other facilities available include Wi-Fi, common rooms, study rooms, TV rooms and laundries. Each hostel has its own warden, senior tutor and tutors looking after the welfare of the residents.


The Chan Tak Tai Auditorium, with a seating capacity of 1,031, is a first-class venue for the holding of various functions, ceremonies and performances organised by the University and various student organisations.

Student Amenities

A multifarious range of student amenities are provided to facilitate social interaction and to promote personal and group activities. 

The Amenities Building comprises the student activities areas, the University Canteen with a seating capacity of about 500, the Chinese Restaurant with a seating capacity of about 300, and a coffee bar with open air seating of about 50. The Building provides accommodation for meetings and activities of programme-based societies, clubs and various interest groups.  

Exhibition Gallery

The Leung Fong Oi Wan Art Gallery is located on levels 2 and 3 of the Patrick Lee Wan Keung Academic Building with a total area of about 450m2. The Gallery is suitable for various kinds of exhibitions and functions, including exhibiting various types of artwork.
