Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons) in Chinese Medicine 中藥學學士(榮譽)

BPharm

Short Description

The programme encompasses pharmaceutical science of Chinese Materia Medica (CMM), basic theories of Chinese medicine, basic science, western pharmacy and practicum training. During the four-year study, students are required to complete a 15-week practicum and an Honours Project. Courses are taught in English, Putonghua and Cantonese. Throughout the programme, research concepts and tools are introduced, and the concept of “Whole Person Education” is also emphasized in the student-oriented General Education programme.

Transdisciplinary Second Majors / Second Majors

The University envisions the importance of transdisciplinary innovations in response to the global challenges and offers a flexible curriculum structure that is much more agile and fits the present and yet-to-known future needs. Students will have the opportunity to opt for a transdisciplinary second major (TSM) / second major (SM) on top of their major. TSMs are geared for particular talent needs in Hong Kong and prepare students to pool knowledge from  disciplines to excel in multiple careers, whereas SMs prepare students to gain in-depth knowledge from another discipline to complement the first major. This approach equips students not only for their careers, but also the future development of their respective fields. Nine TSMs / SMs will be launched in the 2025/26 academic year (subject to the approval of the University Senate).

Student Learning Experiences

Starting from year one of the study, students will attend the practicum sessions in which they have plenty opportunities to broaden their knowledge. During the summer break after the first year of study, students are required to attend a 2-week practicum in the Medicinal Botany. During the summer breaks after the third and fourth years of study, they will attend the practicum in either a pharmaceutical plant or an herbarium in Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Shaoguan or Guangzhou.

Career Opportunities

Career opportunities of the BPharm graduates include CMM quality control in the government sectors and business management in the commercial sector of Chinese medicines. Graduates can also pursue research postgraduate study in either local or overseas institutions for the development of new drugs.
