Bachelor of Arts in Landscape Studies 園境學文學士

BA(LS)

Short Description

The Bachelor of Arts in Landscape Studies [BA(LS)] is an internationally recognised undergraduate degree offered by the Division of Landscape Architecture. Our programme delivers a broadly comprehensive education in the landscape architecture discipline. We teach the knowledge, concepts and skills required to respond creatively, professionally and ethically to the urgent social and environmental challenges faced by our cities and regions today. Students graduating from our BA(LS) programme may continue their studies in the professionally-accredited Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) programme at HKU, or apply for study in some of the world’s top postgraduate programmes.

Landscape architecture is an increasingly critical discipline that binds a core capacity in design and planning with fluency in ecology, civil engineering, and geography. This interdisciplinarity extends back to landscape architecture’s origins, where the profession and its antecedents engaged with the challenges of human settlement and environmental risk; planning for health, recreation, and conservation in the industrialising city; and remediating the landscapes of pollution that followed. Landscape architecture today faces challenges of rapid urbanisation, resource depletion, climate change, rising sea-levels, and declining biodiversity. Whether you end up engaging with a corporate client, informing a government body, or participating with an environmental non-profit, our degree will give you the critical, creative, and intellectual tools to advocate for just and sustainable change moving forward.

Candidates are required to take part in the Creative Design Response, a short exercise designed to allow candidates to express their creativity and independent thinking. The criteria measured by the exercise include critical analysis, creative problem-solving, and self-organization. The exercise proposes a new question every year and is completed at home and submitted as a digital upload through the programme website. Instructions for taking part in the Creative Design Response brief will be sent to all potential candidates via e-mail and posted on the programme website. Portfolio of creative work (which may include drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, creative writing, video, multi-media work) could be submitted in soft copy.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview. Candidates are strongly encouraged to show a portfolio of creative work (which may include drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, creative writing, video, multi-media work) during the interview.
