BSc(Speech)
Short Description
The Faculty of Education offers a five-year full-time Bachelor of Science in Speech and Hearing Sciences (Honours) programme that prepares students to become a compassionate, professional speech therapist.
This intensive programme provides students with the knowledge, skills and practical experience necessary to become a scientific, effective and adaptive speech therapist. Courses cover subject knowledge in acquisition, development and disorders in human communication, speech and language, and swallowing, as well as knowledge in other related disciplines, such as medical science, psychology, English and Cantonese linguistics and hearing sciences. The curriculum employs a student-centred translational learning approach. Students will be engaged in lectures, self-directed learning, case-based learning, small group learning, and clinical practice. Students will complete a final-year research project in the fifth year.
The programme emphasises integration and application of knowledge and scientific evidence in clinical practice. Clinical teaching is provided by both University staff and practicing clinicians from the community. Students receive over 300 hours of supervised clinical practicum, conducted predominately in Cantonese. Students may have opportunities to receive interdisciplinary and international service training.
Note: Students must be able to communicate fluently in Cantonese.

Calculation of scores for applicants with more than 1 sitting in HKDSE Examination
In general, most of the programmes offered by HKU consider the best results achieved by candidates in different combination of sittings, except for a few programmes which only consider the latest results. Few programmes may also impose a penalty on HKDSE repeaters. The policy on the calculation of scores in combined sittings of HKDSE for the 2022-23 exercise will be finalized at a later stage, which will be posted on our website https://www.hku.hk/dse.
