Why PolyU?

At PolyU, students realise their potential and acquire real-world practical skills that are critical in a rapidly evolving world. Our distinctive academic programmes provide students with numerous opportunities to develop as lifelong learners, global-minded leaders and socially responsible citizens.

PolyU’s four-year undergraduate curriculum offers a flexible, student-centred and holistic professional education. We are committed to opening the minds of the next generation so that young people can create positive change in the world and help shape a brighter future.

Departmental Scheme-based Admission

PolyU adopts departmental scheme-based admission in order to provide a broader educational base and a more flexible progression pathway for students, as well as a more agile mechanism to meet changing societal manpower needs. These changes will provide greater flexibility for students in their choice of degree programmes and specialisations.

Students are free to select their major/specialisations at the end of Year 1 study unless specified otherwise by schemes concerned. Out of the 33 Schemes on offer, 13 Schemes (listed below) have set screening criteria for students to select their major/specialism towards the end of the first year of study/during Semester 2 of Year 2 for JS3170. However, applicants with outstanding academic performance will be considered, at the time of admission, for advance placement (with no restrictions to select a desired major/specialism within a Scheme). These applicants will also be notified of this special provision, if applicable, in their Notice of Offer or by separate email in advance of their acceptance. Prospective students can visit the website of the 13 Schemes for more details:

New Feature of Undergraduate Programmes

Given the emergence of Industry 4.0 as a key trend that is shaping the future, students not only need to gain solid academic knowledge, but also master the skills on innovation and technology and possess an entrepreneurial spirit in order to be highly competitive in the contemporary society. In view of this, two new elements, namely "Artificial Intelligence and Data Analysis" (AIDA) and "Innovation and Entrepreneurship" (IE), have been incorporated into the General University Requirements. All undergraduate students must complete at least 2 credits of the AIDA courses and at least 1 credit of the IE courses before graduation. Students can also opt for a secondary Major or a Minor in AIDA and IE.

Academic Structure

The four-year undergraduate degree programme is designed to provide students with a flexible, student-centred, holistic professional education. The overall credit requirements are as follows:

Minimum credit requirement for graduation

120 credits

General University Requirements (GUR)

30 credits

Discipline-Specific Requirements (DSR)

66 - 102 credits

Undergraduate students are required to achieve 30 credits in subjects under the General University Requirements, with the objective of broadening their horizons and promoting their holistic development. Students are also required to fulfil Discipline-Specific Requirements (66-102 credits) to develop fundamental discipline-specific knowledge and skills, so as to prepare them to become professionals in their chosen field.

Opportunities for Excellence

PolyU students will be exposed to countless learning opportunities both inside and outside classroom, allowing them to specialise in their areas of interest and follow their dreams.

Vigorous classroom learning is designed to develop students’ professional knowledge and sharpen their skills. At the same time, a wide array of "Out-of-classroom" learning opportunities, such as mentorship programmes, industry-based student projects and study tours, are also available for students to prepare themselves for possible career paths. Other out-of-class activities are offered to meet different interests and needs, and for the all-round development of students.

The Student-Athlete Learning Support and Admission Scheme and the Outstanding Sportsmen Recommendation Scheme provide opportunities for outstanding student-athletes to study at PolyU while continuing their pursuit of excellence in sports. Participants in major international competitions or members of the Hong Kong Teams /Junior Teams are welcome to apply for admission to PolyU through these Schemes. In addition, the University has commenced the “Special Talents Admission and Recognition Scheme” (STARS). Students who have demonstrated remarkable talents in sports, arts and culture, leadership and community services, STEM, and entrepreneurship and others will be considered under this scheme. It aims to serve as an alternative admission route for those whose exceptional achievements cannot be fully reflected in their HKDSE results.

Students have plenty of opportunities to engage in research programmes that are supported by the government and research organisations. A new Undergraduate Research and Innovation Scheme has been launched to provide full-time undergraduate students with the opportunity to conduct research projects under the supervision of the University’s scholars. The experience and skills acquired will prepare students for their future endeavours and open up a broader career horizon for them after graduation.

PolyU has an excellent record in knowledge and technology transfer, transforming innovations and research breakthroughs into real-world industry solutions and social advances. The University also fosters entrepreneurship development and promote entrepreneurial spirit through providing seed funding, mentoring, training and incubation resources to support student and alumni startup ventures.

Unique Curriculum

To nurture bright minds to become leaders of tomorrow, PolyU puts strong emphasis on Service-Learning, Leadership Training and Work-Integrated Education.

PolyU was the first institution in Hong Kong to launch a credit-bearing Service-Learning programme, which combines professional knowledge, service and practical social experience in order to nurture students to become global citizens and leaders with a strong sense of social responsibility.

In addition, PolyU offers credit-bearing courses on leadership and interpersonal development to more than 2,000 students every year with a view to equipping them as future leaders.

Another notable feature of PolyU’s undergraduate curriculum is the mandatory Work-Integrated Education (WIE) programme that requires students to engage in authentic projects or work as interns in an organisational context. With a variety of local and offshore intern opportunities offered in Hong Kong, Mainland China as well as in overseas countries and regions, WIE enables our students to attain workplace readiness before graduation, thus enhancing their competitiveness.

Global and Mainland Exposure

PolyU’s extensive global connections help broaden the international perspectives of our future generations. PolyU has a solid presence in Mainland China, with three regional bases (Hangzhou, Xi’an and Chengdu), two liaison offices (Beijing and Shanghai) and a research institute in Shenzhen. The University also makes good use of the opportunities brought about by the Greater Bay Area (GBA) development, setting standards for education and research collaborations between institutions of Hong Kong and those of other GBA cities, thereby fostering talent development in the region. Additionally, the Belt and Road Initiative has given a new momentum to the University’s effort to internationalise and broaden our students’ outlook.

We put a strong emphasis on internationalisation. We have established strategic partnerships with universities, other institutions, industries and corporations all over the world with a view to offering study, exchange, internship and Service-Learning opportunities for students to learn without borders and develop their talents in different cultures. In particular, our Student Exchange Programme offers the opportunity for study in more than 260 renowned universities across 36 countries and regions. In the 2021/2022 academic year, more than PolyU students go outside Hong Kong on exchange and over 350 inbound exchange students come to the University.
