Short Description

Computer Engineering (CENG) and Computer Science (CSCI) are four-year programmes offered by The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), which is the first computer science department in Hong Kong that started to launch its undergraduate major programme in 1978.

While both CENG and CSCI are rigorously founded on problem solving by programming, data structure, and algorithm design, CENG distinguishes itself from others by offering specialized training for students in areas such as mobile embedded systems, microprocessors, VLSI design, hardware-aided security, and super-computing. On the other hand, CSCI focuses more on software innovation and offers diverse specialized areas such as artificial intelligence, bioinformatics, big data analytics, cloud computing, computer and network security, database and information systems, graphics and computer vision, and machine learning.

With effect from 2022-23, students can be directly admitted to the CSE department through department-based admission. After the first year of study, eligible students will be invited to declare their major in CENG or CSCI. Students with outstanding HKDSE results and good academic performance in the first year of study are guaranteed their first choice of major.

Preferred subjects: Mathematics Extended Module I or II, Biology, Chemistry, Combined Science, Design and Applied Technology, Information and Communication Technology and Physics.

REMARK:
The programme accepts specific Applied Learning course(s) with "Attained with Distinction I/II" as an extra elective subject.

Note 2:
The two subjects may include:
(i) 2 New Senior Secondary elective subjects#; or
(ii) 1 New Senior Secondary elective subject and Mathematics (Extended Part) Module I or Module II. 

# Other Language subjects (Grade E or above) will be considered as an unspecified elective subject in fulfilling (i) above.

Note 3:
"Attained with Distinction I/II" in Applied Learning subjects will be accepted by some programmes as an extra subject for awarding bonus points. For details, please click here.     

Calculation of scores for applicants with more than 1 sitting in HKDSE Examination

Most programmes offered by CUHK consider the best results in the same subject taken by a candidate in more than one sitting of HKDSE.  Some programmes may have specific arrangements and the admission scores of candidates seeking admission on the strength of results from more than one sitting of HKDSE may be adjusted.  Details of calculation of scores in more than one sitting of HKDSE for the 2023-24 entry will be finalised and posted at the admissions website (admission.cuhk.edu.hk).
