Short Description
Business IS Smart
Global tech giants including Amazon, Meta (formerly Facebook), Google, NVIDIA and Microsoft have fully rewritten business workflows powered by intelligent digital systems. Today’s enterprises leverage the ABCD core stack – Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, Cloud Services and Digital Transformation – to streamline operations, unlock data-driven growth and launch customer-centric innovations at scale.
The Department of Information Systems under CityUHK’s College of Business holds two landmark global accolades: it is Hong Kong’s largest IS department by undergraduate student and full-time faculty headcount, ranked 1st in Asia for Information Systems research (AIS 2019–2024) and 5th worldwide in the UTD Top 100 Business School IS Research Rankings (2017–2024) [1]. Rooted in world-class research, our department is dedicated to nurturing future-ready tech-business talent to thrive in tomorrow’s smart economy.
Technology IS Reshaping Global Business
Generative AI, large language models, big data analytics and enterprise cloud infrastructure have become non-negotiable enablers of corporate digital transformation. Paired with social media ecosystems, 5G mobile technologies, Web3, FinTech and cybersecurity governance, these tools fuel innovation across core Hong Kong industries: financial services, professional audit & accounting, digital marketing, e-commerce and cross-border trade.
Industry data confirms 92% of global corporations now deploy generative AI to boost operational efficiency, while 75% of C-suite leaders rely on big data analytics for strategic decision-making. Our curriculum aligns fully with this real-world industry shift, equipping students with practical, deployable tech-business skills.
Research IS Driving Cutting-Edge Innovation
Our faculty belongs to the world’s elite cohort of Information Systems scholars, publishing high-impact research covering generative business AI, social network analytics, cloud governance, FinTech risk control, data privacy and digital entrepreneurship. We actively invite undergraduates to join supervised research projects, consulting case studies and academic publications alongside leading professors, opening pathways to postgraduate study and research-focused careers.
Practice IS Foundational to Career Success
Students gain direct exposure to real-world corporate challenges via exclusive networking sessions with CityUHK EMBA senior executives and our extensive global alumni network. We organise overseas study tours, Silicon Valley tech firm visits, Greater Bay Area FinTech project placements and international business competitions spanning Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific.
The Department offers dedicated IS Smart Business Scholarships to reward outstanding academic performance and fund student participation in regional and global innovation contests. Our learners turn raw information systems technology into tangible business value for organisations of all sizes.
Information Systems IS Smart Business
We deliver a comprehensive, constantly updated curriculum covering today’s most in-demand digital disciplines: social media analytics, mobile app development, generative AI & multimodal modelling, Python machine learning, big data visualisation, enterprise cloud architecture, IT audit and FinTech compliance.
Beyond technical know-how, students build high-value transferable strengths: cross-cultural communication, end-to-end project management, stakeholder consultation and ethical digital governance. Graduates graduate fully equipped to lead enterprise digital transformation and bridge the gap between business strategy and cutting-edge technology.
