Short Description
HKUST School of Science offers two general School-based program choices for JUPAS applicants, i.e. Science (Group A) program (JS5102) and Science (Group B) program (JS5103). Science (Group A) program is tailor-made for those students who are interested in the fields of physical science. Science (Group B) program is more suitable for those students who are interested in the fields of chemistry and life science.
Program Curriculum:
The Science (Group A) program (JS5102) at HKUST School of Science is tailor-made for those students who are interested in the fields of physical science. It provides an invaluable opportunity for students to have a deeper understanding of various aspects of science and their personal interests before they decide on their majors. The goal is to offer a more diverse, interdisciplinary, and inquiry-driven undergraduate education to students interested in science. Students can enjoy high flexibility in major and minor choices in accordance with their aspirations.
The program aims at nurturing young scientists who can contribute to the betterment of mankind with advanced scientific knowledge. Students will be equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to engage in activities demanding scientific thinking, analysis and task execution, so that they can excel in their future professions including research and development, education, manufacturing, logistics, and business and finance.
The School has particularly placed enormous efforts and resources into designing its laboratory and signature courses with the aim of nurturing students’ competency in experimental methods and logical analysis, which are the two indispensable pillars of scientific method. In addition to rigorous academic training, we give equal emphasis on students' personal development. A wide range of co-curricular activities and training are provided to further enrich students' university experience. These include but are not limited to student exchange, undergraduate research, internship, community services and engagement programs designed for the School of Science students only.
Program Structure:
The program flexibility caters for students with diverse academic and career aspirations, while ensuring the development of a solid foundation and adequate exposure to a range of science disciplines. Most science major programs offer different study tracks and options, and provide opportunities for double majors and minors. The study tracks and options enable students to deepen their understanding of the major discipline, which will be useful for graduate degrees in the future. The additional major and minor allows students to leverage on synergy across academic disciplines. It is possible for students to take various combinations of majors, not only within the School but also across Schools.
Students admitted to Science (Group A) program can opt to declare their corresponding majors offered by the School of Science, as well as the Joint School Programs and the programs offered by Academy of Interdisciplinary Studies, upon completion of the first year of study.
Remarks:
Students admitted to the Science (Group A) program of the School of Science can apply for transfer into the International Research Enrichment program (JS5101) after their first year of study. Students interested in IRE are encouraged to include both Science (Group A) program (JS5102) and IRE program (JS5101) in their program choices in JUPAS.
Under School-based admissions, students admitted into the School of Science through Science (Group A) program (JS5102) upon completion of the first year of study will enroll into one of the following degree programs:

- Non-Chinese speaking (NCS) students may use an alternative Chinese subject, an HKDSE Other Language subject, or an HKDSE Applied Learning Chinese subject to satisfy the University’s Chinese language requirement.
- The result(s) of Liberal Studies in previous sitting(s) will also be considered in HKUST General Entrance Requirement. Level 2 or above is required.
"Attained" level in Citizenship and Social Development and the result(s) of Liberal Studies will not be considered in the admissions score calculation. - The above subjects refer to Category A subjects.
- Grade C or above in Category C (Other Languages) subjects can count as Elective 2 (for some programs).
Calculation of scores for applicants with more than 1 sitting in HKDSE Examination
Once the minimum entrance requirements have been met, the best results achieved in all sittings will be used for calculating admissions scores.
