MBBS(DMS)

Short Description

In addition to the MBBS curriculum, students in the Distinguished MedScholar study track will be further nurtured to become a scholar of academic excellence and compassionate member of the medical community by a series of activities such as academic workshops, community-based projects and the elite mentorship programme.

Students admitted to MBBS (Distinguished MedScholar) are provided with the following arrangements:

  • guaranteed residential places in student hall(s), with hall fees to be covered by possible financial support from HKUMed;
  • guaranteed an opportunity to pursue an extra university degree in addition to MBBS and graduate in the normative study period of six years; and
  • guaranteed that elite mentorship be offered where students could make their own choice of mentors from within the Faculty or the University.

Students in MBBS (DMS) can complete the programme in six years plus a Master of Research in Medicine (MRes[Med]) to be undertaken during Enrichment Year (EY) in the third year. Upon completion of MBBS and MRes[Med] and the one-year internship, students will receive financial support from the Faculty to pursue a PhD at a renowned university and potentially join the Faculty as clinical academics upon completion of PhD. Students may also choose other Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree option in EY, and graduate with an extra degree.

  2. "Attained with Distinction" obtained prior to 2018, or "Attained with Distinction (I)" or "Attained with Distinction (II)" obtained in or after 2018, in Applied Learning subjects (other than Applied Learning Chinese) will be used as additional supporting information. In the meantime, student learning experiences in Applied Learning subjects may be considered within the context of other learning experiences in their application.
  3. Level 2 in Liberal Studies achieved in previous sitting will be considered in lieu of Citizenship and Social Development.
  4. Other Language subjects will be used as unspecified elective subjects. Please refer to hku.hk/dse for details.
  5. The result(s) of Combined Science and Integrated Science achieved in previous sitting(s) will also be considered.

Calculation of scores for applicants with more than 1 sitting in HKDSE Examination

In general, most of the programmes offered by HKU consider the best results achieved by candidates in different combination of sittings, except for a few programmes which only consider the latest results.  Few programmes may also impose a penalty on HKDSE repeaters.  Please refer to https://www.hku.hk/dse for details.
